As South Africa completed their perfect run in the group stages of the T20 World Cup with a comprehensive victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE), they are poised to go all the way, believes former Proteas player Robin Peterson.
South Africa restricted UAE to 122 in their innings, and then wasted no time in knocking off the victory target inside 14 overs with just four wickets down.
This follows their dominant win over New Zealand, their tense double Super Over win over Afghanistan, and their thumping of Canada in their tournament opener.
For a Proteas team which came into the competition somewhat under the radar for a change, it’s been a breath of fresh air for Peterson.
"They are in a good place. I think winning is always helpful. They have a good chance of going on to win it," Peterson told SportsBoom.co.za.
"It's just about playing the big moments well, which they seem to do now as a team. So, they look in a good space, and they are organised as a unit.”
South Africa actually qualified for the next stage of the competition with a game to spare, which rendered the match against the UAE a dead rubber.
The Proteas already know their fixtures for the Super Eight, with a rematch of the 2024 T20 World Cup final against India lying in wait in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Matches against the West Indies and Zimbabwe will follow before the semi-finals.
