SA’s Dean Burmester pocketed the huge sum of R41.19 million for finishing in second place at the LIV Golf Hong Kong event on Sunday.
The Stingers player Burmester finished on 15-under for the 54-hole Saudi-funded event, three behind Spaniard Sergio Garcia who claimed the title.
It’s not the first big payday this season for Burmester, after he pocketed R18.4m at LIV Golf Riyadh, and R5.71m in Adelaide last month.
Despite earning over R40m in Hong Kong, it’s just over half of Burmester’s biggest ever payday on the LIV Golf circuit. Burmester won a staggering R77.1m at the LIV Golf event in Miami in April last year.
After the tournament, Burmester was more than pleased with his game at the moment.
“Throughout the week I kind of felt like my game was trending in the right direction, ” Burmester said.
Burmester said throughout the final round, he felt that he was close to doing something special.
“Super proud of how I hung in there, and I gave Sergio a small run for his money. He obviously played a great run of golf, but I'm happy with second place and where I am in the individual standings.”
Every part of his game was firing, explained Burmester.
“The whole part of my game in Hong Kong came together—today with an eight-under, but before that, I made some really good putts in round one to keep the momentum going and shoot four-under. Yesterday, I hit some quality shots and didn’t get rewarded. So, I felt like my whole game was trending in the right direction, and second place shows that.”
Brumester’s countrymen and Stingers teammates Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, and Louis Oosthuizen were all tied on seven-under in a tie for 20th.
