The fullback position has emerged as a major concern for the Sharks ahead of Friday’s EPCR Challenge Cup round of 16 clash against Connacht (kick-off 9pm), after rising star Luan Giliomee became the latest backline casualty in Saturday’s 21-15 United Rugby Championship victory over Cardiff Rugby at Kings Park.

The teenager, fresh off a dream try-scoring debut in the 45-0 rout of Munster, was forced off in the first half, prompting a backline reshuffle. Le Roux Malan’s introduction at centre saw Yaw Penxe shift from the wing to fullback – a move that may now have to become a more permanent solution.

Giliomee’s injury compounds an already extensive backline casualty list. The Sharks are currently without first-choice fullback Aphelele Fassi, Grant Williams, Siya Masuku, Jaco Williams and Jurenzo Julius, among others, leaving coach JP Pietersen with limited options and some tough calls to make ahead of the trip to Ireland.

Penxe remains the most straightforward option at fullback, but Springbok wing Edwill van der Merwe could also come into contention. The former Lions flyer has covered the position before under John Plumtree, though a lack of recent game time and his omission from Saturday’s squad raises questions about his match sharpness and his place in the current pecking order.

“The backs are falling. That’s why I was maybe thinking maybe I must put my boots back on just to give us a boost,” Pietersen joked after the match.

“Injuries test the character of the squad. Gilly coming off was unfortunate, but it gives the next guy an opportunity.”

Just who that will be remains to be seen.

There is, however, a timely boost for the Durban side with the return of Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth, who adds both physicality and leadership after serving his 12-week suspension.

Emile van Heerden has grown in stature in the No 5 jersey in the absence of the Springbok legend, forming a formidable lock partnership with Jason Jenkins. However, Etzebeth's presence could be key as the Sharks look to lay a solid platform up front to ease the pressure on a makeshift backline.

With  a demanding away fixture looming, the Sharks must find solutions quickly. Their ability to adapt – particularly at fullback – could prove decisive in keeping both their URC and Challenge Cup ambitions on track.
