Faf de Klerk’s injury woes have continued after he suffered a serious ankle injury while playing for the Yokohama Canon Eagles in the opening-round clash of the Japan Rugby League One season.
De Klerk posted a video in which he informed fans that he will return to South Africa for treatment.
The 34-year-old was injured just 32 minutes into the new season in his team’s defeat to the Shizuoka Blue Revs after attempting a tackle on wing Valynce Te Whare.
De Klerk was hoping for a big season in Japan as he looks to remind Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus that he is still around. However, he is slowly but surely slipping out of the Springbok picture after featuring just twice in the green and gold in 2025.
He played only three times for the Boks in 2024 after being overtaken in the scrumhalf pecking order by Cobus Reinach, Grant Williams and Morne van den Berg.
De Klerk’s last appearance for the Boks came off the bench against Georgia in Mbombela in July.
Yokohama said earlier this week that De Klerk has temporarily withdrawn from the competition, marking the third consecutive season in which injury has plagued his campaign.
“Once again, I feel very sad to be leaving and disappointed,” said De Klerk, who missed a chunk of last season because of a hand injury.
“I felt I really worked hard to come back and be ready for this season, but I’m going back to make sure I get in the best condition possible to return, join the team again and support if I’m not playing.
“I’ll be back as soon as possible to see all the supporters and players and hopefully join the last few games.”
