There's probably never been a better time to put some money on Bafana Bafana as they will enter the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) as rank outsiders to win the title, according to the bookies.

The tournament in Morocco begins on December 21 and runs until January 18.

Of the 24 teams entered, hosts Morocco are listed as the favourites for the event with a 19% chance of winning.

Egypt are second favourites with a 12.75% chance of winning.

Bafana’s 2.11% World Cup Win Chance: Defying Expectations Under Coach Hugo Broos

As for Bafana, they are listed down in 10th with a 2.11% chance of winning.

This is quite staggering considering they are riding high after qualifying for the first Fifa World Cup since 2002.

Then of course there was their incredible third-place finish in the previous edition.

Under coach Hugo Broos, Bafana have continued to defy expectations and they would definitely consider themselves as genuine title contenders.

Earlier this week, former Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo spoke about what it would mean for SA football to appear at the Fifa World Cup again.

“It's vitally important; we needed that [qualification for the World Cup], we were desperate for that,” Khumalo told IOL in an exclusive interview.

“Not just for us, the supporters, retired footballers, but for the kids. It's important to keep that inspiration going in terms of just keeping the national team attractive, keeping it competitive, because it is your country and that should be the highest privilege as a sportsman.

“And what Hugo Broos has done in the boys, they've revived that passion, that interest, the love for the national team once again. And we support them fully, regardless of the outcome; we've made it, we're there.”
