Chelsea star Cole Palmer will reportedly ask to be transfer listed by the club as he doesn’t think the club have any prospects in winning the Premier League title.
Speaking to Card Player, former Chelsea player Marcel Desailly said Palmer has been frustrated by what’s happened at the club this season.
“I believe Palmer wants more stability and a system that’s built for him, but he still needs to fully recover from his groin injury and get back to full fitness. His recent performances speak for themselves, so he needs to stay humble and come back into the team to help the club, regardless of whether he stays or goes,” Desailly said, according to the report.
The desire to move away from London is also fueled by the player not settling in well in the English capital, meaning a move back to his hometown of Manchester might become an appealing option.
Palmer came through the ranks at Manchester City but grew up as a Manchester United supporter who idolised Wayne Rooney. He left City in 2023 after struggling to secure regular first team football under manager Pep Gardiola.
A return to City seems unlikely as he would immediately encounter the same problem. This leaves Manchester United, the team he supported as a child.
United aren’t in a better position than Chelsea at the moment, and finished 15th in the Premier League last season. However, if the club can secure European football next season, he could easily be enticed to make the move, especially if it was pitched in a way that would see him central to their future plans.
Palmer is currently injured, and is only expected to return to action next month.
Chelsea face the prospect of convincing their standout talent that there is a clear plan, real progress and a genuine pathway back to the top of English football. If they cannot, the noise around his future will only grow, and a player once seen as a cornerstone of the club’s rebuild could soon become the latest high-profile name to look elsewhere for a realistic shot at Premier League glory.
