South Africa’s Under-17 national team, known as the Amajimbos, has entered the crucial phase of preparations for the upcoming Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, scheduled from 3-27 November.

South Africa are in Group A alongside hosts Qatar, Italy and Bolivia. They will start the tournament against Bolivia on November 3, face Qatar three days later, and conclude their group phase against Italy on November 9.

Amajimbos’ journey to this prestigious tournament has been marked by notable achievements, including their recent victory at the COSAFA U17 competition in Zimbabwe and success in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which secured their qualification.

With the tournament fast approaching, head coach Vela Khumalo has called 31 players into a selection camp, eager to refine their skills and build on the momentum gained from previous competitions.

However, Khumalo, who also manages the Kaizer Chiefs DStv Diski Challenge team, expressed concerns about the team’s preparation.

“Remember, the only preparation (in terms of playing matches) we had was when we took the same team to the Zone 5 tournament, where we were playing U20 sides. We competed against U20 sides in July,” he remarked, highlighting the limited match experience prior to the training camp.

The training camps in Johannesburg mark the beginning of an intensive preparation period. The squad is checking out on Sunday and set to regroup next Monday. The structured approach to their training reflects Khumalo’s commitment to ensuring that his players are both mentally and physically prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

“Time is running out for us and preparations are far from ideal,” Khumalo noted, emphasising the urgency of their preparations.

Under Khumalo’s guidance, the squad has demonstrated consistent growth and development, building a strong foundation for success as they prepare to confront formidable opponents in Qatar.

Enthusiasm for this talented group of youngsters is mounting, as fans and football enthusiasts alike wait to see how they will fare against the best in the world.
