Zambia Premier League giants ZESCO United will host South African visitors Kaizer Chiefs in a CAF Confederation Cup Group D match on Sunday (kick-off 3pm) at the 50 000-seater Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Chiefs’ pending visit to the Copperbelt town has raised great excitement, and ZESCO chairperson Patricia Musiya has affirmed that the fan base will mobilise in significant numbers to support the team.
“From the North to the South, East to the West, let our voices roar as one. Let Ndola feel the thunder of the Zega faithful. Let Africa witness the power of Zambian football,” said Musiya.
The Chiefs delegation, led by sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr, and coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, arrived in Zambia on Friday with a 22-man playing squad. The South Africans are determined to make a statement in this season’s continental campaign.
Chiefs are still searching for their first victory in the Confederation Cup this season, having collected just one point from two matches. They opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Al Masry before holding Zamalek to a 1-1 draw, a result that has placed early pressure on the side.
The ‘Glamour Boys’ last met ZESCO United during the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup play-off round, where they suffered a 5-2 aggregate defeat after losing 3-1 at home and 2-1 away.
Later on Sunday, Stellenbosch, who top Group C in their Confederation Cup pool, should find comfort in the familiar named Nelson Mandela Stadium in what will be a hostile welcome against CR Belouizdad of Algeria in Baraki, Algiers. That match kicks-off at 9pm on Sunday.
