Bafana Bafana’s steady rise in recent months is facing a defining test as they build towards the 2026 Fifa World Cup, with preparations intensifying ahead of the tournament’s kick-off in June.

Under the guidance of Hugo Broos, the national side is currently taking part in a two-match international friendly series against the Panama national football team. The opening match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Bafana creating several clear chances but ultimately falling short of securing the win, though the performance will give the squad confidence heading into Tuesday’s clash in Cape Town.

Oswin Appollis found the equaliser after Edgar Barcenas had given Panama the lead early in the second half, but Bafana were unable to convert their overall dominance into a winning result. It was, however, a display that underlined the team’s growing cohesion and attacking intent.

With competition for places intensifying, these friendlies serve as more than just preparation fixtures. They provide a crucial platform for players to impress Broos and stake their claim for selection, particularly with limited time remaining for the squad to fully settle ahead of the global showpiece.

With changes expected for Tuesday’s encounter, several players will be eager to build on their performances from the first match and strengthen their case, and here we look at the three players that impressed in the first match.

Oswin Appollis

The Orlando Pirates midfielder continued his impressive run of form, delivering another energetic and effective display while seamlessly carrying his club momentum onto the international stage.

Appollis is steadily strengthening his case for inclusion in the World Cup squad. His consistency in the final third, combined with his work rate and ability to influence matches, suggests he could play a key role for Bafana both in the build-up to the tournament and during the showpiece. His continued development will be a major positive for Broos as he looks to finalise his squad.

Khulumani Ndamane

The former TS Galaxy defender has had to remain patient for opportunities at international level, but he made the most of his chance when handed a rare start. His performance reflected the form that earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns earlier this season.

Composed in possession, Ndamane’s left foot added valuable balance to the defence while also helping initiate attacks from deep. His passing range allowed Bafana to maintain control and transition quickly into forward areas, highlighting his ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch.

With regular defenders expected to return, competition in central defence remains intense. However, his assured display has certainly given Broos something to consider ahead of the next selection, particularly as the coach looks to build depth in key positions.

Tshepang Moremi

Tshepang Moremi was given another opportunity to impress and will be encouraged by his contribution in the draw. Having shown promise in recent outings, he continues to grow in confidence at international level and is beginning to establish himself within the squad setup.

While these friendlies offer valuable preparation, time is limited with the World Cup fast approaching. Alongside several of his club teammates, Moremi has brought confidence and form into the national setup—qualities that could prove crucial as Bafana continue to fine-tune their preparations for what will be a significant test on the world stage.
