In the wake of a disappointing exit from the CAF Confederation Cup, Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef addressed the media on Monday, reflecting on his team’s journey while setting expectations for Tuesday evening’s Betway Premiership clash against Stellenbosch FC (kick-off 7.30pm).

With aspirations for continental success dashed, the focus now shifts entirely to the domestic league.

“I think it was a disappointing result. We wanted to come back from Egypt with qualification,” said Ben Youssef, referencing the recent campaign that ended with the team finishing on 10 points — just shy of securing a place in the knockout stage.

“For us, we have to learn. We must learn from our mistakes and understand the importance of how many goals you score and how many you concede,” he added.

Ben Youssef highlighted how an inability to convert more chances into goals ultimately cost them their place in the tournament, after losing 2-1 to Zamalek in their final Group D encounter.

As the team transitions back to the league, Chiefs look to regroup and harness the lessons learned from their African expedition.

“Now it’s done. We’re back to the PSL, and we must continue to fight,” Ben Youssef said, underscoring the resilience he expects from his squad.

Following their return from a gruelling 10-day stint in Egypt, the players enjoyed a much-needed three-day break to recharge. Ben Youssef noted the importance of this rest for maintaining mental and physical well-being.

“We were aware of how many games the players were playing. They needed to disconnect from football temporarily, reflect on life outside the sport, and come back refreshed for the challenges ahead,” he explained.

Looking forward to the match against Stellies, Ben Youssef described the team’s preparation as vital.

“We are treating each game as if it were a cup game, managing the situation one game at a time,” he said.

“This week has provided us with ample time to prepare properly and conduct training sessions. I believe the team is ready to continue to fight.”

With renewed focus, Chiefs aim to reclaim their position in the league and regain their form, setting the stage for a high-stakes encounter against a Stellies side that recently knocked them out of the Nedbank Cup.
