Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe has shared his thoughts on the challenges the team faces and their unwavering belief in turning their fortunes around.
As the club gear up for a crucial Betway Premiership match against Durban City on Sunday, Maboe’s words resonate with the urgency felt in the dressing room, where morale is understandably low amid disappointing results.
“As anyone would expect, the mood inside the camp is not very good because we’re obviously not getting the results that we want,” Maboe acknowledged, highlighting the weight of expectation that follows a club with as rich a history as Chiefs.
However, there is a flicker of hope.
He added: “We are very confident that we’ll definitely turn the corner in Sunday’s game.”
The squad had some breathing room this past week — a rare pause that they have used to introspect and regroup.
“This past week gave us some time to really reflect, sit down and look at the things that we did right, that worked for us in the past,” Maboe explained.
This reflective period allowed the team to analyse their play and dissect the missteps that have contributed to their stumbles — a critical exercise in understanding what has been “haunting us.”
During this time, the Chiefs’ players have dedicated themselves to intense training sessions. Maboe stated,
“We’ve been hard at work,” reinforcing the team’s commitment to correcting its course.
The positive response within the group gives them a resilient outlook heading into the pivotal encounter.
Moreover, Maboe emphasised the need for self-assessment among players, particularly at a club renowned for its professionalism and ambition.
“As players, we need to look at ourselves realistically. Professionalism and mentality are very important, especially in a big institution like this one,” he pointed out, indicating that the players are prepared to take ownership of the situation.
With eagerness in his voice, Maboe concluded: “What I can say is that we’re all looking forward to the game on Sunday.”
This sentiment reflects the squad’s determination to emerge from a testing time as they prepare to battle for valuable points in front of their fans. Victory on Sunday could see the players share in a performance bonus of approximately R93 000 as the club looks to incentivise a return to winning ways.
