Wonderboy Makhubu has expressed his relief at opening his Stellenbosch FC goalscoring account and hopes it’s the catalyst for many more at his new club.

Makhubu, who joined Stellenbosch from Sekhukhune United in January, has endured a frustrating start to his tenure at the Maroons after joining from Sekhukhune United in January.

The 29-year-old has delivered impressive performances every time he’s been out on the park, leading the Stellies frontline like a “proper No 9”, according to coach Gavin Hunt, but could just not get the ball into the back of the net. And when he did it was ruled off side.

A red card for a studs-up tackle on Magesi FC defender Tshepo Makgoga two weeks ago also added to the frustration as Makhubu was forced to sit on the sidelines for a couple of games.

But the talented striker was determined to make amends upon his return and delivered the equaliser just when his side needed it most against TS Galaxy on Friday evening at the Danie Craven Stadium.

“It felt really great to score my first goal for Stellenbosch, but the most important thing was to help the team get a point,” he told StellenboschFC.com.

Makhubu’s header came in his sixth appearance for Stellies across competitions and admitted he needed some intervention from the higher powers to finally get on the scoresheet.

“From the first minute, and in fact in every game, I have the belief that I am going to score. I approach every single move, from when it starts at the back with the build-up play, with the mindset that it’s going to end with me putting the ball in the net,” he said.

“So, when it went out wide, I instinctively moved to the box expecting the cross. Devin saw me, and when it came, I did a short prayer to say, ‘Eish, can I please score this one!’ because I had played a few games for the Club without scoring.

“Of course, bit by bit, that puts a person under more pressure, but I am a striker and it’s my job to score goals, so I was very happy to open my account.

“That has boosted my confidence a lot, so hopefully, going forward, even more goals will come.”

Stellies are unbeaten in four league matches now, but dropped down to 10th place on the weekend and still face an uphill battle to secure a top eight place.

Hunt will be hoping Makhubu brings his scoring boots along to the next Betway Premiership clash against Golden Arrows on Wednesday in KwaZulu-Natal.
