Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise has cautioned his former side against underestimating Marumo Gallants as the Brazilians look to reclaim top spot in the Betway Premiership when the two sides meet at Loftus Versfeld Stadium this evening (kick-off 7:30pm).
Sundowns currently sit second on the table, just one point behind leaders Orlando Pirates. However, they have been presented with a major opportunity to seize control of the title race, as a victory would see them move two points clear at the summit on equal games with their closest challengers.
On paper, it is a fixture Sundowns are widely expected to win, particularly against a Gallants side battling near the bottom of the standings. Siwelele sa Marumo are currently third from bottom and remain locked in a relegation fight, compounded by the absence of suspended head coach Alexandre Lafitte.
Yet, following Pirates’ recent 1–1 draw against Siwelele FC, Modise has urged his former club to remain focused and avoid complacency, warning that Gallants are still capable of causing an upset despite their struggles this season.
“It is a team that we can’t take for granted because we drew with them in the first round,” Modise said on the Pitchside Podcast.
“We need to take pride in that we are unbeatable at home, but being unbeatable is not enough — we need to win the game. The focus must be on Marumo Gallants, and taking it one match at a time rather than worrying about what lies ahead in the coming weeks.”
With just ten matches remaining before the end of the campaign, the title race remains finely balanced. Modise stressed that nothing should be left to chance, regardless of any advantage a team may hold.
“We can’t ignore the fact that, based on expectations, we should have been three points behind going into this match, but that’s not the case,” he added.
“That tells you how difficult the league has become — there are no guarantees. You have to go out there and win your games, then assess the situation afterwards. Yes, there are expectations when facing a struggling side like Marumo Gallants.
“But we know how dangerous those teams can be, especially when they are fighting for survival. They often raise their level on the day. We need to make sure we take control early, finish the game, and put ourselves back at the top of the table.”
