A Top 8 finish remains within reach for Golden Arrows and Stellenbosch FC, though the journey has been far from smooth, marked by twists and turns — and now, the next step could prove decisive in defining their season.

As the two sides prepare to meet once more, their showdown at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday (7.30pm kick-off) could play a key role in determining which team climbs higher in the standings.

Just one point separates both clubs from TS Galaxy, who currently occupy the final Top 8 spot, though they have played a game more than their chasing rivals. With the season approaching its end, both Arrows and the Maroons will be keen to seize the opportunity and break into the top half.

The two sides have already faced each other twice this season. Stellenbosch, then under Steve Barker, edged a thrilling 4-3 win in their first meeting, while Arrows responded in the Nedbank Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory. This latest encounter now looms as a potential decider, with both teams aware that a win could dramatically boost their chances of finishing the season on a high.

Abafana Bes’thende arrive with confidence after a vital 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants in their last outing, while Stellenbosch, coming off consecutive draws, will be eager to turn those performances into full points.

Reflecting on their recent 1-1 draw with Galaxy, Stellies coach Gavin Hunt expressed frustration over their slow start, believing a victory would have put his side in a stronger position ahead of this meeting.

“We were hugely disappointed in the game against Galaxy because I felt it was a real chance, but obviously the way we started the game was really poor, and we did come back into it, but to start the way we started was a bit disappointing,” Hunt said, ahead of the match.

The former Durban City coach acknowledged how closely matched the two teams are and stressed that this upcoming game will be different.

“Arrows are right above us, and we are equal on the same points, and it's really crucial that we come away with something tomorrow.

“This will be the second time we play them in the month. In the first game we played really well, but we were unfortunate. We missed a lot of opportunities, we got beaten and knocked out with just one chance, and it's disappointing to concede that goal, but it will be a different game.”

Hunt also praised the impact of forward Wonderboy Makhubu, who recently scored his first goal for the club after a string of promising performances.

“He has done okay, and he has given us something different, something we do not have up there. He has given us a few options to play, he has gotten his first goal.

“He will be a big part of the club going forward. We just need to get him settled down a bit more. Happy that he got his first goal, and long may it continue.”
