Kaizer Chiefs will be eager to continue their unbeaten run when they visit arch-rivals Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon (3pm kick-off).

Given that Pirates are in top form, having scored 17 goals in their last five matches, Chiefs will need to be well organised. Below are the key areas they must get right on derby day:

Start the game on a high

Pirates have been lethal in front of goal of late, but they dropped points in matches where they conceded first – against Siwelele and Richards Bay. Chiefs must capitalise by getting on the front foot.

A bright start will not only help them settle into the game, but also bring their supporters into it, applying pressure on both Pirates and their 12th man.

Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine is chasing his 18th clean sheet of the season to match Ronwen Williams’ record. That pursuit could add pressure and create opportunities for Chiefs.

Remain rock-solid

Chiefs failed to score against Polokwane City in their last match, but they kept a clean sheet and have conceded only twice during their recent run.

With Pirates’ attack, led by Relebohile Mofokeng, in top form, Chiefs cannot afford lapses. Defensive discipline will be key.

The return of goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is a boost, adding stability at the back.

Get the midfield balance right

Lebohang Maboe has been central to Chiefs’ recent form, including multiple Player of the Match performances.

However, he cannot do it alone. A partnership with Siphesihle Ndlovu could provide the right balance, given their previous understanding at Maritzburg United (now Durban City).

Deliver in the final third

Given Chaine’s form, Chiefs may find it difficult to break Pirates down. They must create variety in attack and deliver quality balls into the box.

Flávio Silva started the month strongly, scoring in three consecutive matches. After failing to score in the last game, the derby presents a perfect opportunity to respond.

Embrace the occasion

Form often counts for little in a derby, making it unpredictable and highly anticipated.

Pirates dominated the reverse fixture with a 3-0 win. Chiefs must rise to the occasion, take the game to their rivals, and embrace the moment.

A derby victory offers more than just three points and bragging rights it is also a defining experience for the players.
