The Soweto derby between arch-rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is expected to be tightly contested at the Calabash on Sunday afternoon (3pm kick-off), given the magnitude and stakes of the match.
The team that reigns supreme won’t only rule Soweto and the better parts of the country, but will also bag three invaluable points, which could consolidate their end-of-season aspirations – a title push for Pirates and a top-three finish for Chiefs.
The players will ultimately decide the outcome, carrying the full responsibility for securing those three points. However, below, we look at why the game could be won by either side across all three departments.
Defence
Pirates have had the best defence in the league this season, conceding only 11 goals so far. Their rock-solid organisation has been mirrored by goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who has kept an impressive 17 clean sheets, matching a club record.
Chiefs are not far off either – they’ve conceded only three goals more than Pirates, with captain and No. 1 Brandon Petersen admitting at the pre-match Soweto derby press conference that he is enjoying his best season at the club.
Another solid defensive performance from both sides will go a long way in securing three points – and vice versa. That’s why Chaine and Petersen must organise their defensive units well to ensure they keep their opposition at bay.
Midfield
Pirates are blessed with strong depth in midfield, with coach Abdeslam Ouaddou rotating personnel with ease. This has given them assertiveness, cohesion, and control since the start of the season.
Chiefs, meanwhile, have largely relied on individual performances, with Lebohang Maboe holding the team together at times. His solo efforts have been a double-edged sword – placing pressure on him while pushing his teammates to step up and help restore balance.
Despite their contrasting approaches, both teams need to consolidate their plans. A well-functioning unit brings stability, while individual brilliance can still produce a cult hero in the derby, especially if he inspires his side to victory.
Attack
Pirates have struck a strong balance in their title pursuit, scoring the most goals (50) in the league alongside their defensive strength. They are now closing in on a club record of 52 goals in a season, but they cannot slow down – goals remain essential to winning the derby.
Chiefs, meanwhile, have recently rediscovered their scoring touch, netting 12 goals during a purple patch. After being held to a goalless draw away to Polokwane City last weekend, they will be eager to rediscover their attacking rhythm.
Scoring in the derby won’t only add excitement to what promises to be a thriller, but will also bring both teams closer to achieving their respective targets.
DEFENCE will be key but it is the attack that is expected to sparkle the Soweto derby on Sunday.
