Mamelodi Sundowns will host Kaizer Chiefs in a Betway Premiership match at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday (7.30pm), eager to further solidify their pursuit of a record-extending ninth title in a row.
Sundowns have superior depth and momentum compared to Chiefs, as they are unbeaten in 14 league matches so far, showing the ability to step up during the business end of the season. However, Chiefs are expected to give them a run for their money.
Amakhosi are wounded after their seven-game unbeaten run in the league was ended by Siwelele last Wednesday, which is why there would be no better time for them to bounce back to winning ways. Chiefs might also be set to end the season without a trophy, but there is still a top-three finish to fight for.
Given all the stakes heading into the clash, we look at three matchups that could define the game.
Mokoena has established himself as a midfield kingpin in South African football over the years, winning admiration through his consistency and commitment for both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.
The 29-year-old thrives in an anchoring role. He makes his team tick both offensively and defensively, and has an eye for runs, passes, and goals — qualities that make him a complete midfielder.
Mokoena’s attributes will be tested by former teammate Maboe. The multiple championship winner with Sundowns has slotted seamlessly into Chiefs’ engine room, winning duels and helping structure the team effectively, which has earned him multiple Player of the Match awards recently.

Having returned to full fitness, Cupido has slotted seamlessly into Sundowns’ central defence. He has helped guide Khulumani Ndamane, who is still finding his feet at the club.
Cupido stands out as a strong reader of the game; he knows when to commit and make tackles, while his composure on the ball inspires confidence in the rest of his defensive unit, including goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
With Duba set to threaten him on the night, Cupido must be at his best. Duba might not be a prolific goalscorer, but his work rate is undeniable. He combines movement, trickery, and team spirit, making him a nuisance for most defenders.
Rayners returned to the scoresheet in the last match against Polokwane City, netting his 12th league goal as he trails top scorer Junior Dion by one goal.
Winning the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot would cap an outstanding individual season for Rayners, but his primary focus remains helping the team; making a decisive contribution against Chiefs would be especially significant.
With his pace, trickery, aggression, and eye for goal, Rayners is set to be a major threat to the Chiefs' defence. However, the rejuvenated Msimango is expected to track him closely. He reads the game well, tracks attackers effectively, and is always ready to make crucial clearances.
