Spring tide alert: NSRI warns beachgoers of dangerous rip currents and rising tides this weekend

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has issued a safety alert ahead of the new moon spring tide, which peaks on Saturday, 20 December, warning beachgoers, anglers, and coastal hikers to exercise extreme caution as tidal conditions intensify.
According to the NSRI Communications Manager Andrew Ingram, the spring tide caused by the alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth, will result in higher-than-usual high tides and lower low tides, increasing the risk of rip currents and coastal hazards.
“This natural phenomenon significantly increases the tidal range, and its effects will be felt over the weekend and into the coming days,” said NSRI Ingram.
The NSRI is urging the public to be vigilant, especially in areas prone to strong tidal flows such as the Knysna Heads and narrow inlets.
“Rip currents will be stronger than usual, particularly during outgoing tides in the late afternoon,” Ingram warned.
Ingram added that beachgoers are advised to swim only at lifeguard-protected beaches and between the designated flags.
He added coastal hikers should avoid trails that may become submerged during high tide, while anglers are urged to fish from a safe distance and wear life jackets when on rocks or cliffs.
The NSRI also recommends using the free SafeTrx app to log trips and access emergency support.
“We want everyone to enjoy the coast safely. Plan ahead, stay informed, and respect the ocean,” Ingram added.
The public is encouraged to monitor weather updates from the South African Weather Service and follow local safety alerts. The NSRI emphasised that the spring tide’s effects could linger for several days.
