With crime spiralling out of control in Lawley, ActionSA has raised urgent concerns, demanding immediate intervention from the Gauteng Department of Community Safety before the situation worsens.
The party stated that Ward 121 is grappling with a surge in crime, including robberies, housebreakings, and violent attacks, leaving the community deeply affected.
John Moodey, an MPL for ActionSA in Gauteng, stated that the rise in crime has not only caused significant distress among residents but has also disrupted local businesses and economic activities. Despite the efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the extent of the problem continues to exceed their current capacity.
He also stated that the nearest police station is 8 km away, posing a significant challenge for the impoverished community to access.
Moodey stated that the party has formally requested the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety to urgently deploy a mobile police station in Ward 121.
“In light of these challenges, ActionSA has written a letter to the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety to request the immediate deployment of a mobile police station in Ward 121. The presence of such a station would play a pivotal role in increasing police visibility, strengthening community-police relations, and providing a more accessible point of contact for residents to report crimes and seek assistance,” Moodey said.
He also stated that the intervention would help restore a sense of safety and security for the residents. ‘It would also serve as a valuable resource for crime prevention initiatives and could support the collection of intelligence to address organised criminal activities in the area.’
Moodey has urged the MEC to prioritise the request and provide a timeline for the deployment of the mobile police station. As a constructive opposition, ActionSA is dedicated to further engagement on this issue and will facilitate discussions with local stakeholders to ensure the initiative's success.
Moodey also emphasised ActionSA's commitment to protecting residents, strengthening law enforcement in the fight against crime, and upholding the rule of law. He stated that the party will follow up at the Provincial Legislature to ensure that the community of Ward 121 is provided with a mobile police station to help reduce crime in the area.
