South African aviation is once again making headlines as FlySafair and South African Airways (SAA) have been recognised as the most punctual airlines in the Middle East and Africa.
This accolade was revealed in the January 2026 Airlines & Airports On-Time Performance Report by Cirium, highlighting a significant improvement in the operational performance of these carriers.
FlySafair leads the pack
FlySafair, a low-cost carrier (LCC) specialising in domestic and regional flights, ranked first on the list of the most on-time airlines.
The airline achieved an impressive 91.81% on-time arrival rate across 5,434 tracked flights. This performance places FlySafair at the forefront of the aviation industry in the region.
SAA followed closely behind, securing the second position and earning the title of the most on-time national carrier in the Africa and Middle East region.
According to the January report, SAA recorded an 87.12% on-time arrival rate for 2,743 flights, marking a strong improvement in its operational metrics.

The report lists the top 10 most on-time airlines in the Middle East and Africa as follows:
This ranking reflects a competitive landscape where South African airlines are making significant strides in operational efficiency.
A strong recovery for SAA
The Cirium 2025 Middle East and Africa Airlines On-Time Performance Report previously highlighted SAA's exceptional punctuality performance on the continent.
Despite operating a smaller fleet and a narrower route network compared to its East African competitors, SAA has achieved remarkable milestones.
Analysts attribute the ongoing aircraft groundings and global spare-parts shortages to disruptions faced by several major African carriers, which have inadvertently given leaner airlines like SAA an advantage in maintaining high punctuality rates.
In the report, Cirium also noted that SAA posted an 81.26% on-time arrival rate from 24,461 tracked flights.
This performance reflects steady operational improvement as the airline continues its recovery following a significant restructuring process.
The changing landscape of African aviation
In recent years, Kenya Airways has been Africa's most punctual flag carrier in both 2023 and 2024, while Ethiopian Airlines dominated the ranking for five consecutive years before that.
During their peak years, both airlines consistently completed over 70% of flights on schedule.
As the aviation industry continues to evolve, the achievement of SAA serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of South African airlines in the face of challenges.
With ongoing improvements in operational performance, the carrier is well-positioned to lead the way in African aviation.
