The holiday season is the busiest time for taxi travel in South Africa. Long-distance routes connecting cities and provinces face heavy demand, crowded ranks and unpredictable schedules.

Travellers often compete for limited seats, while taxis sometimes depart late or make extra stops, causing delays. Planning and staying alert can make long-distance travel safer and smoother.

Arrive early

Arriving early gives you a better chance of securing a seat on a long-distance taxi. Ranks can fill quickly, especially on routes to major cities or popular holiday destinations. Early arrival also allows you to inspect the taxi.

Check that the vehicle is in good condition, the tyres are safe, and the driver follows traffic rules. Avoid boarding a vehicle that appears unsafe or overcrowded.

Keep your belongings safe

During peak season, crowded ranks can attract pickpockets. Keep your valuables close to your body and avoid displaying expensive electronics.

Pack essential items in a secure bag and have your fare ready before boarding. For long trips, separate cash from other valuables in case of theft or loss.

Plan for breaks and emergencies

Long-distance trips can be exhausting. Plan for rest stops to stretch, use restroom facilities and eat or drink. Keep a charged phone and emergency contacts ready.

Being prepared helps you stay alert and respond quickly if unexpected situations occur.

Have a backup plan

Even with preparation, long-distance travel during the holiday season can be unpredictable. Have backup options ready, such as an alternative taxi route, a bus or a rideshare service.

Flexibility allows you to adapt quickly if your original plan fails.

Follow safety guidelines

Safety should be a priority throughout the journey. Wear a seatbelt if available and ensure your luggage is secured. Do not board taxis that appear to be unsafe or are carrying more passengers than allowed.

Following these guidelines reduces the risk of accidents or conflicts.

Maintain composure in crowded ranks

Peak-season ranks are busy and sometimes chaotic. Stay calm, patient and polite. Avoid arguments over seating or boarding order.

Following rank rules and observing local practices makes the experience smoother for you and others.
