South Africans are lucky to have kilometres of beautiful coastline, yet we often head straight for the big-name destinations where prices climb in peak season.
The good news is that there are smaller seaside towns that offer the same ocean views, fresh air and relaxed pace, without the heavy price tag.
If you are planning a break and want value for money without sacrificing charm, these five coastal towns are well worth considering.
Tucked along the Garden Route between George and Great Brak River, Glentana is quiet, neat and wonderfully low-key.
It is mostly residential, which means no noisy crowds and no over-commercialised beachfront.
What makes it special is its simplicity. Wide, clean beaches stretch for kilometres, backed by dunes and fynbos.
No flashy attractions are competing for your attention. Instead, you get space, calm and the soothing rhythm of the sea.
Things to do: Take long beach walks at sunrise or sunset. The coastline feels almost untouched, making it perfect for switching off and reconnecting with nature.
Pennington, on the KZN South Coast, offers warm water, lush greenery and a relaxed village atmosphere. It is close enough to bigger hubs for convenience, yet far enough to feel peaceful.
Accommodation here is often more affordable than in the more tourist-heavy South Coast towns.
You will find self-catering homes and cosy guesthouses that make family trips or group getaways manageable on a budget.
What sets Pennington apart is its mix of beach and forest. The coastal vegetation creates a refreshing contrast to the open shoreline.
Things to do: Spend the morning swimming or relaxing on the beach, then explore the nearby coastal forest trails. It feels like two different escapes in one.
Struisbaai is famous for its long, white-sand beach, one of the country's longest uninterrupted stretches.
The water is often calm and shallow, which makes it ideal for families with young children.
The working harbour gives the town character. Fishing boats still head out daily, and there is a genuine, down-to-earth coastal feel that many travellers love.
Compared to some of the Western Cape’s trendier seaside spots, Struisbaai remains refreshingly affordable, especially outside peak season.
Things to do: Walk the endless beach. Whether you are jogging at dawn or strolling in the late-afternoon light, the open horizon and a fresh sea breeze are unforgettable.

Located along the Sunshine Coast, Port Alfred offers the best of both river and sea.
The Kowie River runs through town, creating a marina lifestyle that feels far more upmarket than the prices suggest.
It is a great option for travellers who like variety. You can surf or sunbathe on the beach, then head to the river for boating, paddling, or simply relaxing by the water.
Despite its scenic setting, accommodation and dining options are generally more affordable than in some of the country’s better-known coastal towns.
Things to do: Explore the Kowie River by kayak or small boat. Seeing the town from the water adds a different dimension to your stay.

Often seen as a gateway town on the South Coast, Port Shepstone has more to offer than many realise.
Its rugged coastline, historic lighthouse and nearby quieter beaches make it a solid budget-friendly option.
Because it is a working town, everyday costs such as groceries and dining can be more reasonable than in purely tourist-driven areas.
That practicality works in your favour when planning a longer stay.
Things to do: Visit the lighthouse and explore the surrounding coastline. The dramatic views and crashing waves capture the raw beauty of the KZN coast.
You do not need a luxury budget to enjoy a memorable seaside escape.
Sometimes the most rewarding holidays are found in smaller towns where life moves slower, the beaches feel less crowded and your money stretches further.
These coastal gems prove that an affordable getaway can still feel truly special.
