The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has confirmed that one of its councillors survived a shooting on the N2 highway near the Mtubatuba area in northern KwaZulu-Natal late on Sunday night.

The party did not make the councillor's identity public when contacted for comment on Monday, as they still needed to verify the details of the incident.

The party commented after reports emerged that an IFP councillor from the Mtubatuba Local Municipality was wounded while travelling on the N2 highway between Mtubatuba and Mfekayi in the north of the province.

The reports said the victim received medical attention following the attack. The circumstances and motive behind the shooting remain unclear at this stage, and authorities are investigating the incident.

The IFP stated, “We can confirm the incident, but there are certain things that the party still needs to verify regarding what transpired, as we are still looking to engage with the councillor involved on what happened.”

The incident comes as political parties are gearing up for the local government elections that are expected to held later this year.

In a recent statement, the IFP said the elections “present a critical opportunity to consolidate and expand the gains made” by the party across municipalities, and to strengthen our position as a credible, people-centred alternative in local governance.
