The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has urged South Africans to register to vote as President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the local government elections will take place on November 4.
He made the announcement on Thursday. In a statement the IEC said all eligible South Africans who are not yet registered, or who have changed their place of residence, must ensure that they are registered in the voting district where they ordinarily reside, as voters can only vote at the voting station where they are registered.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said: “The announcement of the election date provides clarity for all role players and certainty of planning for the Electoral Commission as we continue our work to deliver free and fair municipal elections.”
To register, prospective voters can make use of the Commission’s online registration platform available at registertovote.elections.org.za by visiting the Electoral Commission website on a desktop computer or mobile phone to register.
Registration details can also be updated on the site. The commission will also hold a national voter registration weekend on June 20 and 21 at voting stations across the country where voters can be registered.
The Commission urges all eligible citizens to take this opportunity to verify their registration details early and to participate fully in shaping the future of their local communities.
The IEC said the voter's roll will officially close when the official proclamation of the election date is made by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
