The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape is reeling after a horrific shooting incident claimed the lives of three young constables in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The incident, which appears to be a domestic dispute turned deadly, occurred at a residence on Rudman Street just before 1am on Thursday.
According to preliminary reports, a male constable allegedly forced his way into the home of his former girlfriend, who was also a constable. She was reportedly in the company of another male colleague at the time.
Witnesses described hearing a volley of gunfire echoing through the neighbourhood. When responding officers arrived at the scene, they discovered their three colleagues with multiple gunshot wounds. Two of the members were declared dead at the scene, while the third succumbed to injuries shortly after being rushed to Cuyler Hospital.
Eastern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, expressed his profound shock at the tragedy. “This is a tragic and devastating loss for the SAPS family. Three young officers have lost their lives under heartbreaking circumstances,” Ncata said.
“We are providing trauma debriefing and counselling to all members affected, and we will ensure the families receive the support they need during this difficult time.”
SAPS confirmed that a state-issued firearm and 10 live rounds were confiscated from the scene. The weapon will undergo ballistic testing as part of the formal investigation.
Because the fatalities involve the discharge of a police firearm, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been dispatched to conduct a parallel investigation. An internal disciplinary docket has also been opened by the SAPS.
