A policeman has been killed and a second officer is in a critical condition following a shooting incident on Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the members of the Crime Intelligence were ambushed.

"KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene alongside security partners, where they found a vehicle riddled with bullet holes and two injured officers," KZN VIP spokesperson, Gareth Naidoo said.

Advanced life support was initiated for the critically injured officer, who was stabilised on scene before being airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

The second officer showed no signs of life and was declared dead at the scene.

A manhunt has been launched for the suspects.

National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said SAPS specialised units, including crime intelligence operatives, detectives, the organised crime unit, and highly trained police officers, are working around the clock to track down and apprehend those involved.

Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, condemned the attack.

"No stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice," she said.

SAPS has deployed its Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) experts including psychologists and chaplains to the family and SAPS crime intelligence unit to offer psychosocial services.
