Suspended EMPD acting chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni City Manager Kagiso Lerutla will remain in custody until at least Thursday after the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court postponed their bail application.

The court delayed proceedings to allow the defence to receive the charge sheet, a move expected to clarify the full scope of the allegations.

Both men were remanded in custody.

Mkhwanazi faces charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice. He was arrested on Saturday at his Gauteng home by the SAPS Madlanga Commission Task Team.

Authorities reportedly found ammunition during the operation. He has been on precautionary suspension since November 2025.

Lerutla was arrested on Sunday at OR Tambo International Airport. His legal team says the case against him relates to an incident dating back to 2019.

The arrests are linked to a broader investigation into alleged irregularities within the Ekurhuleni Metro.

Mkhwanazi’s recent testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into corruption has placed him at the centre of the unfolding probe.

The case returns to court on Thursday, where prosecutors are expected to present further details as both men prepare to apply for bail.
