In a swift move to maintain operations, the City of Ekurhuleni has appointed Tsholofelo Koopedi as interim City Manager following the arrest of its top official.

City spokesperson Phakamakile Mbengashe confirmed to IOL that Koopedi will serve for one day to ensure continuity.

The development comes after City Manager Kagiso Lerutla was arrested on Sunday at OR Tambo International Airport.

He is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday alongside suspended EMPD acting chief commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi, who was arrested on Saturday.

The two face charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

Authorities have ruled out any link between the arrests and a separate IPID investigation into a 2022 killing.

The pair is expected to appear in court together as scrutiny over the case intensifies.
