The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that social grant payments for May 2026 will be made from May 5 to 7, in line with its structured approach aimed at ensuring smooth and secure disbursement to millions of beneficiaries.
According to the agency, payments will be staggered over three consecutive days, beginning with older persons, followed by disability grant recipients, and finally, children’s grants.
The approved payment schedule is as follows:
SASSA said the staggered system is guided by a clear operational framework.
“The general principle for determining the grant payment dates for social grants is to ensure they are paid as early in the month as possible, staggered over three days,” the agency said.
The agency added that several factors are taken into account to maintain the efficiency of the payment system and ensure beneficiaries can access their funds without disruption.
These include avoiding payments immediately after public holidays, not scheduling payments on the first day of the month or on a Monday, and ensuring that payment dates do not fall over weekends.
“To ensure the optimal functioning of the National Payment System and access to funds by grant beneficiaries, the following are also considered: payments should not be made a day after a holiday; payments should not be made on the 1st of the month or a Monday; and payment dates should not fall over a weekend,” SASSA said.
In cases where a payment date coincides with a weekend or public holiday, the agency confirmed that disbursements would automatically move to the next working day.
Grant amounts remain unchanged for May.
SASSA has urged beneficiaries to seek assistance if they encounter any issues with their payments.
“SASSA reiterates its commitment to paying social grants to eligible beneficiaries at the right time and appeals to all beneficiaries who may have not received their grants on these specified dates to visit their nearest SASSA local office for assistance,” the agency said.
