As Gerda Steyn and Arthur Jantjies won the respective women’s and men’s races at the 56km Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town on Saturday, the payouts for the top-10 make for some interesting reading.
In the women’s race, breaking away from Margaret Jepchumba around the marathon mark, Steyn stormed to victory, which was her seventh in a row in the race that she was once again the dominant force.
Jepchumba hung on to claim second place, but collapsed as she crossed the finish line just under six minutes behind the champion.
Nobukhosi Tshuma completed the podium, crossing the finish over 10 minutes after Steyn.

In the men’s race, breaking away in the final few kilometres of the contest, the relatively unknown Jantjies pulled off a big upset over the much-fancied former champion, Onalenna Khonkhobe, who claimed second place.
The pair had stuck together as they neared the finish, until Jantjies pulled off his final burst at the climax to clinch the title.
Completing the podium was Blessing Waison.
