South African teenage midfielder Michael Dokunmu made his debut for Vitesse in the Dutch Eredivisie earlier this season after impressing in their youth structures.
Dokunmu is one of a handful of South African youngsters currently plying their trade in Europe, who have a bright future ahead of them.
IOL Sport takes a closer look at Dokunmu’s fledgling career.
Dokunmu is part of a select group of South African youngsters currently making their mark in Europe. His journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring footballers back home, highlighting the potential South African athletes possess in international leagues.
Born in Kimberley in 2006 to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, Dokunmu has a unique international profile.
He is eligible to represent both Nigeria and South Africa and also holds eligibility for the Netherlands through residency, having been called up to the national under-17 team two years ago. However, after showcasing his skills at the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations in 2023, he confirmed his commitment to play for South Africa, the country of his birth.
Before his move to the Netherlands, Dokunmu honed his skills in the SuperSport United academy, a notable institution known for producing top talents like Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams and Kamohelo Mokotjo.
This foundation has played a crucial role in his development as a footballer.
At just 17 years old, Dokunmu signed his first professional contract in 2022 and made his senior debut earlier this season, marking him as the third youngest player in Vitesse's history.
While this season has largely been a learning experience, marked by patience and perseverance, he continues to seek more first-team opportunities.
Football runs in the family, as Dokunmu's younger brother Ethan, born in 2010, is also showing promise.
The 14-year-old defensive midfielder has been thriving in Vitesse’s junior teams, hinting at a bright future for the Dokunmu family in football.
