It has been an all too familiar sight in recent weeks to see Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen celebrating in this manner, the question is will he be doing the same against Orlando Pirates after missing the reverse fixture in February due to injury.

While three points and bragging rights will be the order of the day in the Betway Premiership Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon (3pm), this could also be a season-defining match for some individuals.

This match could seal the fate of players at their respective clubs, in the South Africa national soccer team squad that will compete at the World Cup in June, and in nominations for the PSL end-of-season awards.

That’s why below we look at five players who must step up and rise to the occasion at the Calabash.

Relebohile Mofokeng – Pirates

Relebohile Mofokeng has been the talk of the town in recent weeks, starring in Pirates’ push for the title as he has contributed with goals and assists.

A talented attacker, Mofokeng has thrived in the No. 10 role, using his nippy feet and good reading of the game to outplay opponents. His qualities need to come to the fore on Sunday to unlock a Chiefs side that has had a solid defensive unit.

Brandon Petersen – Chiefs

Brandon Petersen has been the mastermind behind Chiefs’ solidity at the back, keeping an impressive 13 clean sheets in 19 games this season.

His exploits have caught the attention of Hugo Broos, who insisted he would have been in the last national team camp if not for injury. Now back and fully fit, “Beezer” must continue excelling and keeping things tidy defensively.

Oswin Appollis – Pirates

Oswin Appollis has enjoyed a dream start to life at Pirates. He has been central to the team’s success and progress, and is expected to be nominated for some of the prestigious end-of-season awards.

The 24-year-old cannot afford to rest on his laurels now. He must end the season strongly, contribute offensively, and ensure he heads to the World Cup with Bafana high on morale.

Flávio Silva – Chiefs

Flávio Silva has made his detractors eat humble pie after early criticism in his Chiefs career. He has been central to the team’s recent purple patch, including scoring three goals in the last four matches.

The Guinea-Bissau international will need to maintain his scoring form, while also combining effectively with teammates in build-up play, set-pieces, and defensive work.

Evidence Makgopa – Pirates

Evidence Makgopa has fallen down the pecking order at Pirates, with Yanela Mbuthuma now the team’s leading No. 9. That change in fortunes has put Makgopa’s World Cup hopes in jeopardy, as Broos is likely to prioritise in-form strikers.

Makgopa cannot afford to drop his head. He must capitalise on every opportunity he gets, especially against Chiefs – a side he has troubled in the past.
