Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef says the club is pleased with midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu’s performances, although there is still room for improvement in his game.

Ndlovu was at the centre of attention during Chiefs’ 1–1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in their Betway Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night. Many observers felt the midfielder was overly aggressive in his challenges, including in an incident that resulted in Sundowns defender Keanu Cupido suffering a fractured collarbone.

Cupido was stretchered off the field and taken straight to hospital following the collision.

Ndlovu had also come under scrutiny after the recent Soweto derby, where he was accused of deliberately targeting Orlando Pirates attackers Tshepang Moremi and Relebohile Mofokeng with heavy tackles to disrupt their attacking rhythm.

As a result of his combative approach, Chiefs appeared forced into a tactical adjustment in the second half against the Brazilians. Ndlovu, already on a yellow card and reportedly on a final warning from referee Luxolo Badi, was substituted for Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

Despite the criticism and growing reputation for overly physical play in high-profile matches, Ben Youssef defended the midfielder.

“His performances have been very good in the last few games,” Ben Youssef said.

"Unfortunately, he missed the previous match because of a minor injury, and now he will miss the next game because he has accumulated three yellow cards. Regarding Ndlovu’s performances, there are some weak points that we need to correct, but we are happy with his contribution.”

Chiefs will be without Ndlovu when they face Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday (5.30pm kick-off).
